Corresponding With Your Legislators
![]() |
The best way to contact your legislator is by scheduling a face-to-face visit. Sitting down and exchanging ideas and materials with legislators can effectively communicate an important message. Many state legislators have offices in their district and are certainly receptive to meeting with constituents on their “home turf.”
By Written Correspondence
When time is not a factor, a very effective way to communicate with a legislator is by written correspondence. Legislators receive many letters daily and can take quite some time to respond to a written communication; however, a well-written and detailed letter warrants a similar response.
When writing to a state legislator, use their Lansing office and address:
To a State Representative
The Honorable (insert name)
Michigan House of Representatives
Lansing, Michigan 48909
Dear Representative _____________________________:To a State Senator
The Honorable (insert name)
Michigan Senate
Lansing, Michigan 48909
Dear Senator _____________________________:
By Telephone Call
The best way to contact your legislator(s) during a time-sensitive situation is through a phone call to their Lansing office. Chances are you will not speak to the legislator when you contact them via phone; however, remember passing information along to a staff member can be just as effective. Be brief and to the point when speaking to a legislator or staff member, and always remember to identify yourself, your organization and the purpose for your call early in the conversation.
