MACPA Members Provide Tax Assistance Through
Accounting Aid Society's Tax Assistance Program

The MACPA’s Tax Assistance Program is a key initiative of the Communications Task Force in partnership with the Accounting Aid Society (AAS). In 2008, MACPA members, including seasoned CPAs, new professionals and students, volunteered their time and effort on three Saturdays, February 2nd, 9th and 16th at Focus: HOPE in Detroit. Volunteers completed tax returns for 148 low-income individuals and families. Returned dollar amounts total almost $160,000 over the three-day program.

According to one new volunteer, “I signed up to volunteer because I wanted to help the community, as well as sharpen my tax skills. However, after interacting and talking with the clients, I realized just how much our time and efforts were appreciated. I left happy that I chose to spend my Saturday this way. I will definitely return next year.”

In addition to partnering with the AAS, MACPA also teamed with the Karmanos Cancer Institute to educate clients about the Michigan Department of Health’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program. Through this program, low-income women now have access to life-saving cancer screening services and follow-up care, including cancer treatment if necessary. Representatives from the Karmanos Cancer Institute were on site all three days to register clients for screening.

If you would like to volunteer for the Tax Assistance Program in 2009, the MACPA will be providing tax assistance at Focus HOPE on the following dates: January 31, February 7 and February 14. Please contact Wendi Salmons at wsalmos@michcpa.or or call 248.267.3709 if you are interested.
