MACPA Members Provide Tax Assistance Through
Accounting Aid Society's Tax Assistance Program

The MACPA’s Tax Assistance Program is a key initiative of the Communications Task Force in partnership with the Accounting Aid Society (AAS). MACPA members, including seasoned CPAs, new professionals and students, volunteer their time to assist low-income families and individuals by completing tax returns to put much-needed refunds back into the community.
In 2010, volunteers completed tax returns for 169 low-income individuals and families. The three-day program garnered a total of 32 MACPA volunteers and refunded nearly $221,000 to the Detroit community. This includes roughly $119,000 (Federal) and $101,000 (State).
Volunteers walked away with the knowledge that they helped those who truly needed and appreciated the service. In fact, one client expressed her gratitude by commenting, “My husband and I are so grateful for the Tax Assistance Program. We have come for the past few years and everyone is always so friendly and knowledgeable with answers to our questions. Thank you for such high level of service and kindness.”
In addition to partnering with the AAS, MACPA also teamed with the Karmanos Cancer Institute to educate clients about the Michigan Department of Health’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program. Through this program, low-income women now have access to life-saving cancer screening services and follow-up care, including cancer treatment if necessary. Representatives from the Karmanos Cancer Institute were on site all three days to register clients for screening.
