President of the United States Honors Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants with President's Volunteer Service Award
TROY, Mich., May 22, 2006 – The President of the United States, George W. Bush, has honored the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA) with the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which is an initiative of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.
Nominated by MACPA’s long-time partner, Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan, the President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes Americans who have made a sustained commitment to volunteer service. The Award is given to individuals, families and groups that have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service and civic participation over the course of a 12-month period.
Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan nominated the MACPA for this prestigious Award in recognition of the organization’s Accounting Blitz program. The MACPA Accounting Blitz program teaches Michigan elementary and middle school students smart business principles using Junior Achievement’s proven teaching program. The MACPA Accounting Blitzes are presented in a day-long format where accounting professionals work with students as a supplement to their classroom education. In 2004/05, more than 650 accounting volunteers reached 17,263 Michigan students.
“You allow us to reach many schools we’d never be able to reach otherwise,” said Lenore Litwin, vice president of Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan while presenting the Award to the Association during a MACPA leadership event on May 10 in Lansing. During the Forum, Lenore announced the MACPA would also receive Junior Achievement’s Impact Award. The MACPA is the only Association to receive the honor
this year.
The MACPA continues to promote community involvement and public service through the sponsorship of Accounting Blitzes in cities throughout Michigan in 2006. Accounting Blitzes were held in Detroit at William Beckham Academy, Bennett Elementary and Miller Middle School in May; additional Blitzes are slated for schools in Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Saginaw and Traverse City.
The Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants is a diversified, professional, member-driven organization serving more than 16,000 CPAs and affiliated professionals throughout Michigan. Visit MACPA’s web site at www.michcpa.org.
