Terry Murphy, CPA, and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants to Give Away 10,000 Books to Students in a Day-Long Drop
| WHAT: |
An assembly at Samuel Gompers Elementary School will kick off a day-long book distribution event by Terry Murphy, CPA, and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA). Students at Gompers will be the first recipients of books on Thursday, January 18, 2007. In addition to Gomper’s Elementary, nine thousand books will be delivered to nine other schools including McKenny, Holcomb, Grant and Webster Elementary schools in Detroit. Murphy, a retired CPA and MACPA member, volunteers at the school to tutor students and provide classroom assistance. The donation is a part of the MACPA’s annual book drive honoring the volunteerism of Murphy. The recent MACPA book drive collected more than 13,000 books; 10,000 to be distributed on Thursday and the rest at a later date. Murphy and members of the MACPA will make the presentation and address the Gompers Elementary students on the importance of reading at an assembly at 8:20 a.m. |
| WHY: |
With widespread layoffs and record unemployment, many parents often cannot afford books for their children. Additionally, with massive cuts in budgets and spending in many school districts, particularly in Detroit, extra books are often an unaffordable luxury, and districts often depend on the generosity of individuals and groups to help supplement their resources. |
